After handing one woman a check for her overdue rent, she broke down in tears of relief. Between sobs, she told us for months she had been overcome with anxiety about where her children would sleep if they were evicted from their apartment. She had worked as a maid for a family that was forced to lay her off during the pandemic, which left her with no income and ineligible for unemployment. Sadly, her story is not uncommon. The National Low Income Housing Coalition recently announced 30-40 million Americans would face eviction by the end of the year - a direct result of the economic slowdown and massive job losses caused by the coronavirus outbreak .
