On Palm Sunday, we remember Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Many churches will re-enact Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on a donkey in fulfillment of prophecy by waving palms and crying “Hosanna” (which means, “Save us!” or “Come to our aid!”). Some churches start their Palm Sunday services (the Procession of the Palms) outside.
Sometimes Palm Sunday is also called “Passion Sunday” which is remembering Jesus’ suffering and death. “Passion Sunday” includes the reading of the “passion” narrative: Biblical readings that beginning with Jesus being arrested to his burial.
We start the service by yelling “Hosanna” to our Savior and later, during the Passion reading, we participate in yelling “Crucify Him” to our Savior.
Collect (prayer at the beginning of this service): Almighty and everlasting God, in your tender love for us you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon himself our nature, and to suffer death upon the Cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and come to share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP, 2019)
