A Message from Father Scott: Fast and Pray Between Now and the Election

I want to encourage the All Saints’ Church family to join with other churches across the ACNA to fast and pray during the final weeks before the upcoming election on Tuesday, November 5. These weeks of prayer and fasting are not to be about a particular candidate or political party. All who hold or are running for political office need our prayers (see 1 Timothy 2:1-4). We need to pray for the safety of them and their families, against potential civil unrest, and for clear and accurate accounting of votes cast.

We need to take God’s call for each of us to pray and fast seriously, remembering that our hope is not in the rulers of this world, but in the name of the LORD our God (see Psalm 20:7).

— Father Scott

Suggested Ways to Fast

There are many ways you might fast during this critical time:

1.        A Daniel Fast (following the Bible Hero, Daniel — see Daniel 1): eat only vegetables and drink water.

2.        John Wesley’s fast (famous evangelist and founder of the Methodist church): fast until the evening meal on Wednesdays and Fridays.

3.        Fast one meal per day for the month before the election.

4.        Fast from one specific food (desserts, wine, all sugar, red meat, etc.).

5.        Fast completely from all food, but do drink water.

6.        Fast completely one day per week.

Suggested Ways to Pray

1.        Pray one hour per week (or more) in the Prayer Center (phone the church administrator to get the code).

2.        Pray with a friend or friends in the Prayer Center or in your home.

3.        Pray with your small group. (Need a small group? Contact Jim Morrison.)

4.        Pray the Scriptures.

5.        Commit to pray one hour per day.

6.        Pray for true healing and an end to the strife and division in our nation.

7.        Pray the Great Litany in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP pp. 91-98).

8.        Pray the Collects for The Nation and Society in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP pp. 654-661).
